Elder Berries, or Sambucus nigra, are laden with numerous tales and stories throughout folklore and history, and are particularly linked to those legends and myths involving magic and spirits. Indeed, in English and Scandinavian folklore the belief was held that if you cut down the Elder tree a spirit known as the Elder Mother would be released to take her revenge upon the hapless wood cutter. This could only be avoided while chanting "Old girl, give me some of thy wood and I will give thee some of mine when I grow into a tree." Otherwise, Elder Berries are also held to be a powerful aid in warding off evil influence, as well as curses and spells intended to do harm. Shakespeare even wrote of it, speaking of it as a symbol of grief, perhaps due to many Christian beliefs that Judas was hung from an Elder Tree in his grief, as well as that the Cross of Calvary was made of Elder wood.

While many legends surround the wood, the berries themselves are still frequently utilized in making pies, jellies, and jams, as well as the occasional wine. Some herbalists also hold that Elderberries show potential in treating the symptoms of Influenza, with an extract created from the berry helping many recover in 2-3 days without many of the ill effects that result from many over-the-counter medications. Because of this, it is believe to stimulate the immune system and improve its ability to fight disease.

Remember: This is just general information, always seek medical advice before using.

Water Altar

For Water I chose a bowl of water – the element in its purest form, a chalice, a Dolphin plaque – the majestic creatures of the deep, 2 oyster shells – these could also be used as offering bowls if one chose to, silver, blue and white candles, colours associated with Water and gemstones of amethyst, sodalite and aquamarine.

It is really quite easy to find small things to help represent the elements either on your personal altar, their own special altar or just around the home. For more info read the section on the Elements, it will help give you a basic understanding of the elements and provide a starting point to begin building your own elemental altars.

So One Dream Begins

I have now enrolled in my courses from the School of Natural Health Sciences. I think it is going to be an interesting experience and I am certainly hoping that this becomes my career. I like the idea of being a Herbalist/Past Life Therapist/Nutritionist. It’s a good starting place, later on I would love to properly study Western Herbal Medicine but I am happy with this for now. It’s a great building block.

I’ve always been drawn to herbs and there has been no particular reason for it that I can think of. My mother was never some one who was into herbs other than the dried ones you cook with and neither was any other member of my family. It’s a strange attraction. I feel it is my calling because I feel a passion to pursue it. I did a self past life regression using a cd by Doreen Virtue and I found that I was a herbalist and healer in a past life. Since my focusing skills are less than exemplary I didn’t glean a whole lot but this is what I did find out.

My name was Sophie. It was the year 1526 and I was 23 years old. I was in England somewhere in what looked like a castle or stone fort. I would collect herbs with my Nonna and we would make remedies to help people. The fort or castle was in the country, it wasn’t situated right in a town.
That was all I got but it shows that this is a clear indication that in my past was an interest in herbs. I am hoping to try and find out more as I go on, hence the interest in studying Past Life Therapy. I find it fascinating. I am also hoping to go to a professional past life regressionist and experience it, I feel this important to my development during this part of my course.

So while I am happily slugging away at those courses I am also still doing my Advanced Diploma in Professional Writing through Tafe. I am definitely taking a studious route this year….

Tarot Reading

In case you missed it, I had myself a little ‘The Universe is out to get me’ rant the other day (and I still think it is) but I decided to be more proactive and I did a tarot reading to see what lies ahead. I used my Celtic Dragon Tarot as it is the deck I am most connected to (however I am getting better with my Mystic Faerie deck). This is what I come up with.

(Forgive the way it is written, I tend to write it as though I am doing it for some one else, helps maintain objectivity – my own little reader quirk).

The Reading:

Card 1: Ace of Cups

There will be new beginnings in your life and this will be a time of joy and contentment. It will be an emotionally satisfying time in your life and there will be a lot of positivity and happiness. Your spiritual growth and intuition will expand and take you further than you thought would be possible. Your wish of meeting some one may be fulfilled because this card can also indicate the possibility of a new love in your life. This may seem to good to be true but it is going to be a fertile, happy time in your life. You will find yourself coming up with some great ideas and will feel inspired. This card is also one of intuition, so trust yours.

Card 2: The Star

Again this is a card that pertains to spiritual awakening and potential. However you need to learn to stretch yourself beyond what you think is your potential. This card is one that also indicates hopes, dreams and wishes will be manifested and new opportunities will be presenting themselves to you. Everything appears to be heading in a favourable direction; you have to learn to listen to the energies out there because they may offer some guidance. Your dreams are attainable and you will find help in places you may not have expected.

Card 3: Three of Cups

A time of success, good luck, happiness and prosperity is coming. This may also be a very creative time for you. Some of your problems will be resolved and this will lead to be emotionally happy and fulfilled. Again this also indicates new relationships or the possibility of renewing old ones (this could be a former love or friends you’ve lost touch with). This card is also one of intuition so this will definitely be progressing and growing as the time goes on. With your problems resolved you will find relief and definte good luck along the way.

Overall the time ahead is a happy, positive one with new relationships, experiences and joys. The wishes you have been harbouring will come to manifest, some more than likely in unexpected ways. There can be light at the end of the tunnel and the time ahead will show you that good things can happen.

This is how I usually lay out a reading when I do it for some one else. I tend to be fairly accurate when I do readings (I don’t want to seem as if I’m bragging, this is the general feedback I get) but given my pessimistic nature when I did this reading for myself my initial thought was ‘As if’ because I wondered if this was what I wish would happen as opposed to what is actually going to happen. The future is subjective, this I know and a lot of my issues come from an emotional place as is indicated by the the Cups in the reading.

I want to believe and I have to hope that maybe I can have what I want and be the one who has the luck for once in my life. I’m sticking to this reading and will see how it unfolds because, being the doubting Thomas I am, I also did a reading with my two oracle decks and my Faerie deck to see if it was just me and they all came out fairly positive so I am holding fast with fingers crossed that the Universe is gearing up to be kind and let my dreams come true.

Working With Deity

I’ve never been one for Deity, for most of my life I was atheist and even now, as a witch, I would call myself animist but still fairly atheist. I don’t know that I believe there are greater beings or energies out there that affect destiny and can, with the wave of a hand or a simple thought, change a person’s life.

But lately I’ve been feeling rumblings of that something ‘other’. I’ve written something that felt as though it was channeled by the Morrigan – let me tell you that was the strangest experience. This message kept banging around in my head and no matter how hard I tried to displace it, it would not leave. So I wrote it down and voila, it was gone. It was strange to me because I have never worked with Deity, never felt the need really and because of my oft pessimistic nature, thought even if I went a knockin’, they would not answer.

Then just recently I performed a ritual that invoked/called on the Cailleach (for those not familiar she is an ancient and powerful Celtic deity, one believed to be in existence prior to the Celtic pantheon) and I got a lecture. Stern but loving was the tone – however I am assured that since it summer currently here in Australia I more than likely met the less forceful aspect of the Cailleach who is a winter Goddess. It was very clear when she spoke to me (not a literal voice) and as I wrote her words I knew they were from her.

So two experiences with Deity that seem mostly unexplainable given my belief system and view of Deity. I’ve been reconsidering my stance, mostly because of these two events. I feel a pull toward the darker Goddesses but most especially toward the Morrigan and to a certain extent Hecate. I’ve been researching some others that interest me, especially the Goddesses who live firmly in the wisdom, herbal knowledge and divination areas. I think if I was to pick a patron it would be the Morrigan but I would keep my options open, see who was interested so to speak.

I am open to other world energies, I also think I inadvertently attract them on occasion (but that will be for another post), dragons are a passion of mine, one I have let lapse. As are the Fae, my faery garden is sadly neglected and I think they probably hate me with a passion right now because at one point the garden was quite beautiful. Something I will deign to rectify post haste.

I think this bares more thinking, more exploring before I can make a firm decision. There is much information out there but as always, ultimately I think I will go with my intuition to see where I end up.

I’ve always been a witch, of that I have no doubt but at times I feel like I am such a fraud compared to others I know. I read the blogs of witches and see the amazing things they do…..(so of course no inferiority complex here). I wish I was half as talented. I know what my problem is.

I don’t do the work.

I mean sure, I read a lot (and by a lot I mean it is almost an OCD thing) but I am never practical. I am what is referred to as a ‘book witch’. Now I will proudly fly the flag for my book witch sisters and brothers but I know at some point I will have to step out and throw myself out there, take a chance and bang away on the drum of chance. I do workings, it’s not as if I don’t actually do anything practical, but I think my results (or lack of as it were) speak volumes. I’ve devised a schedule of works made weekly and I am hoping that as soon as I get everything into line (I’m picking up a rather large extra study case load this year) I will have a better idea of where I stand.

Maybe I’ll start being the powerful being I wish I was.

Maybe I will actually be a witch who gets results.

Maybe I might make the time (or get the time away from outside demands) to do the work.

Maybe my maybes will become fact.

Thinking of Change…..

I’ve been thinking about changing my blog template. Simplifying things if you will. This template is beginning to feel a little cluttered and distracting but I have no idea what I feel would suit so I’m going to have a think and come back later….

Do You Ever Feel….?

Do you ever feel like the universe is out to get you? Like you get excited at possibilities and then all of a sudden you get shafted, the wind gets knocked out of your sails; the universe backhands you and deflates any happiness you might feel?

I do.

I’ve been getting it a lot lately. I thought there was an opportunity for me to do some things I had been hoping for, wishing for – even casting a few little spells for. And it’s not like it was unreasonable – any of it. But the Universe saw that I was getting happier, liking the possibility of doing some things I had been dreaming of for awhile and it did what it does best……smacked me down and laughed about it.

I keep wondering what it was that I have done so wrong to have such bad luck. I’m a nice person, I’ve never knowingly hurt another person, I try to live right and be kind but for some reason life just wants me to suffer, to never achieve my dreams or be happy about anything. The Universe is working over time to make sure any spurt of joy is quickly quashed under its huge steel toed boots. It stomps away until I’m left sad, depressed and feeling like hope is a feeling I will never ever know.

I try the positive thinking thing and I really did keep it up because I thought the few things I would like to happen would actually be possible but now those thoughts are dust in the wind, dead in the water, gone like yesterdays.

#3 The Old Hag Witch

The Old Hag Witch reveals that some one fair of face is inwardly twisted and gnarled. Unable to give unconditionally, her true self, sentiments and soul are exposed.

Being strong inwardly, you can see through a fa├žade and are able to forgive a troublesome person’s intentional or unintentional hurtful actions. But forgiveness can only go so far before you must point out to her the damage she is doing to her friends and herself.”

Huh. Well there you go. So I’m thinking this is not how this card will relate to me, I mean that’s not to say I don’t know people like this – we all do and for those whom I do know, I’ve come to terms with their behaviour, I don’t take it personally. It’s who they are. That non-startling revelation aside, this card bears some thinking as how it could relate to my path and myself.

The Old Hag Witch is twisted and gnarled, this I can see, but I think this reflects her path, her journey. She has walked some twisted and gnarled paths and this beats within her very soul, she is a complex person who has seen and done many things in her lifetime, but she is all the more wise for it. The funny thing is that cards past I did a ritual that called on The Cailleach (sometimes spelled Cailleagh, depending on your UK geographical location) and she is considered to be a ‘Hag’ so some strange connections have been coming up.

She told me that my path is too light (perhaps her less than subtle way of suggesting I play at being a witch instead of fully embracing or working toward that goal and she is not wrong I suppose) and that I need to walk the path with more commitment and embrace it. I will admit I do tend to walk in straight lines on my path and have not yet reached the road where I will begin walking the gnarled or twisted paths. I’m lazy, I’ll admit it, I do tend to not work on it as much as I should however I have taken steps to change that. Currently I am doing Witchcraft 2 at Firefly, its addressing issues I have been having about connecting with personal energy among other things so I am learning as I go.

I don’t pretend to be something I’m not but I think I do sometimes tend to not follow through (it’s an Aries thing) but I am trying hard to work toward being a better Witch and person (not that I’m a bad person, call me a cynic….). I am taking steps to work toward my goals. I think perhaps I need to check myself more to make sure I am going toward where I should be.

Wow, well that all came out in a rush. Not where I thought I would end when I started. Blogs are good for self reflection I guess. Get typing and things come out. And since I’m a fairly fast typer (yes yes I brag – I am very fast and mostly accurate) it all came out faster than I had time to absorb.

This calls for reading over and reflecting on my reflections…..

My Witch Cake

I bought a cake tin off eBay that I thought was just the best one I’d ever seen. A tin by Wilton called ‘High Flyin Witch’. It’s a 1980’s tin but I got a good deal on it and wanted to see if I could pull off making a cake. I generally use round tins or loaf tins because quite frankly – I love greaseproof paper, stops things sticking.

So this is my tin – adorable isn’t it?

I made a banana cake. We had some ripe bananas that needing using so I thought –why not? I like banana cake well enough.

I made a double mix as you can see; it filled the tin quite nicely.

Here is the finished non-iced cake. It turned out to be quite a large cake at the end of it. Sooo plenty of cake eating in store for me (luckily I’ve been going for little walks, I think I’ll need to).

I am not the most artistically minded person, in life I am a bit of a klutz. It’s a known and proven fact. However, in the spirit of giving things a go, I iced the cake. It’s not perfect nor is it probably going to win any awards but I did have fun doing it. The original picture had the witch wearing black but I couldn’t get there with my little four colours of food dye so I messed about a bit and ended up with a nice gun metal metallic sort of colour. Quite nice I think.

So that was my latest adventure in the kitchen…….

Candle Making

I’ve decided I’m going to handmake my own candles – it’s an experiment because I have never ever tried it before. I feel like, being that candle magic is my one of the methods I use more than others, that my spells would pack more punch if I made my own because I could fill them with intent as I created them. Plus I kind of like the idea of becoming a crafty witch, I’ll be honest though, my crafts skills are shall we say……non existent. Yes that would be the word for it. I do try but I am more imaginative with words than hands.

My first whack at candle making will be Full Moon candles. I decided to buy some church candles from Cheap as Chips that way I figure if it all goes pear shaped I’m only out  a few dollars as opposed to the amount I would be if I purchased a candle making kit.

I’m always up for an experiment, I will admit that I am willing to give something a try even if the outcome is completely uncertain (as in my mother’s reaction if I get wax from one end of the kitchen to the other) but what the hell? Live and learn.

My Full Moon candles will be white. Scent wise I will be adding Sandalwood essential oil and perhaps a touch of Rose Geranium oil. I will be powdering Chaste Tree Berry and Jasmine Flowers to add to the wax and I will hand dip them. To start with I am going to make smaller candles – I think they will be easier to store and easier to use. I am considering that if this works – and I hope it does – that this country witch might open herself up to the possibility of the idea of selling on eBay again but it will be a long way off. I have to find out if I can do this yet.

So I will keep you all updated on how it goes and post pictures of my candles that will hopefully look and
smell wonderful and pack a bit of a punch come the next Full Moon!!!

For the candle making recipe/instructions I am using look here.

#2 Final Reflections

Although the Immortal Witch I feel wasn’t truly an ‘aspect’ I do take away a lot from her. She has shown me that the impossible can be possible, that things can get better and sometimes dreams can come true – or at least present options to you to help you begin making your dreams happen.

#2 The Cards

In case you hadn’t noticed, I am a bit of a card junkie, I do like to use my Tarot/Oracle cards – generally for a one card clarifier I will use Oracle as it is much easier to work with in this kind of situation (although I am not above doing a lengthy multi-card tarot reading should the situation call for it). So for this card I used my Wisdom of the Hidden Realms and Oracle of Shadows and Light decks.

Fairy of the Highlands

This card is about finding your truth and being strong, of taking back your own and honouring yourself. It is time for me to raise my sword, be strong and go forward. This card also speaks about fearing to use my sword, of going into battle and I think this speaks true of who I have been – I tend to take the path of least resistance and I do let people walk over me at times, perhaps drawing this card in conjuction with everything else that has been going on is a good thing. It is telling me that I need to take chances and believe in myself.

Spirit Whisperer

This card is about divine guidance and intuition. She heralds the miraculous and the inspired. She also helps steer a person toward the right action and away from trouble. The Spirit Whisperer will also guide some one toward their purpose and moving forward. I think this is positive. It speaks of where I am right now, of how I am looking toward my future. As an Ally card she is great to get because she is letting me know that there is purpose in my life and that I will find it. (Nice to know because sometimes a person can have doubts).

My Lammas Altar

My Lammas Altar

This was my altar for the Sabbat, I decided to add in tomatoes this year because our crop has gone quite insane - we are literally getting a bucketful a day! I also took a little top off our corn, it hasn't blossomed as we'd hoped (much like some things this year) but we have hope because our second crop seems to be doing well. The jam is in there because we've been on a jam making binge - helped by cheap and free fruit made available to us. So far my fave jam is the Plum! Black Obsidian for taking the negativity I've been feeling and turning into positivity as well as spirituality, the carnelian is for passion, focus, self confidence, courage and action. I am needing clarity at this time so this altar, aside from representing seasonal elements of Lammas, also highlights the seasonal elements of me and where I need to go moving on from here.

Lammas/Lughnasadh Ritual

Place upon the altar sheaves of wheat, barley or oats, fruit and breads, perhaps a loaf fashioned in the figure of the Sun or a man to represent the God. Corn dollies, symbolic of  the Goddess, can be present there as well.

Arrange the altar, light the candles and censer, and cast the Circle of Stones.
Recite the Blessing Chant.
Invoke the Goddess and God.
Stand before the altar, holding aloft the sheaves of grain, saying these or
similar words:

Now is the time of the First Harvest, when the bounties of nature give of
themselves so that we may survive.
O God of the ripening fields, Lord of the Grain, grant me the understanding of
sacrifice as You prepare to deliver Yourself under the sickle of the Goddess and
journey to the lands of eternal summer.
O Goddess of the Dark Moon, teach me the secrets of rebirth as the Sun loses its
strength and the nights grow cold.

Rub the heads of the wheat with your fingers so that the grains fall onto the altar.  Lift a piece of fruit and bite it, savoring its flavour, and say:

I partake of the first harvest, mixing its energies with mine that I may continue my quest for the starry wisdom of perfection.
O Lady of the Moon and Lord of the Sun,
gracious ones before Whom the stars halt their courses,
I offer my thanks for the continuing fertility of the Earth.
May the nodding grain loose its seeds to be buried in the
Mother's breast, ensuring rebirth in the warmth of the coming Spring.

Consume the rest of the fruit.

Works of magick, if necessary, may follow.
Celebrate the Simple Feast.
The circle is released.

Lammas/Lughnasadh Lore

It is appropriate to plant the seeds from the fruit consumed in ritual. If they sprout, grow the plant with love and as a symbol of your connection with the Goddess and God.

Wheat weaving (the making of corn dollies, etc.) is an appropriate activity for  Lughnasadh.  Visits to fields, orchards, lakes and wells are also traditional. The foods of Lughnasadh include bread, blackberries and all berries, acorns (leached of their poisons first), crab apples, all grains and locally ripe produce. A cake is sometimes baked, and cider is used in place of wine. If you do make a figure of the God from bread, it can be used for the Simple Feast.

#2 New Opportunities

This card had a positive message which was really nice, certain things started falling into place for me after pulling this card – it almost seems as if things could go my way and could provide new opportunities otherwise not presented. I am looking forward to seeing if these new opportunities come forward.

For example – there is a house I have had my eye on, would be the perfect home for a first time buyer. Not to big, not too small, plenty of garden space (which I would need because once I start with a garden, I tend to a little mental), has fruit trees already established (which is great cos the ones at home my Mum and I put in will need some time to establish and grow) and MOST importantly, it has a decent size garage attached which could become business premises later once I do my holistic therapies courses. It appears it may be cheaper than originally thought so yay!

Speaking of courses, I got a newsletter from the school and the package I am looking at doing is a February special, it has about $240 knocked off the price and as luck would have it, I almost have all of the money saved for the current special price. Things are looking up!!
