The Apple Tree

Blossoms on my apple tree
The apple is legend in mythology. It is the tree that held all knowledge, the Forbidden Fruit that was the downfall of humankind. The truth is much different. It seems that ‘apple’ was a generic term for all fruit up until the 17th century, so that apple in the garden? Probably not an apple, it could be that the idea for it to be an apple came to the mind of renaissance painters through the legend of The Garden of Hesperides – Hera’s grove of golden apples.

The Apple itself when cut often has a star in the middle making it popular with witches. Avalon was called the ‘Apple Isle’, the place of legend. Apples are a sacred fruit, a ritual item to be used in Harvest rituals to thank the Gods for their bounty. Whatever your opinion on this humble fruit, it is a very powerful tool (and delicious in pie).
